Each week The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Roland Emmerich, out director of Independence Day, is planning a movie about the Stonewall Riots. The currently untitled film is being written by Jon Robin Baitz and the script is nearly complete. The movie will follow a homeless gay teen who becomes friends with others on the streets and "gets caught up in the riots." The Stonewall riots were also previously dramatized in the 1995 film Stonewall, which costarred Scandal's Guillermo Diaz, and was nominated for Outstanding Film - Limited Release at the 8th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
2) Seventeen-year-old Kim Ho wrote and starred in The Language of Love, a short film for the Australian Theatre for Young People's "The Voices Project." The film follows the inner monologue of a teen named Charlie, who comes to realize that he is in love with his best friend, Sam. The film has garnered over 61,000 views in just two weeks and can be seen in full below:
3) Fox's hit musical comedy Glee has been renewed for two more seasons, putting the show on the air through 2015. This season has seen the series split between the New Directions glee club in Lima, Ohio and New York City where out characters Kurt and Santana live with fellow McKinley grad Rachel. 4) Canadian drama Bomb Girls (airing in the U.S. on ReelzChannel) was recently cancelled, but the parent network has announced they will be filming a two-hour TV movie event to premiere in winter 2014 which will wrap up the character's stories. The series follows four women working in a munitions factory during World War II, including lesbian character Betty McRae who falls in love with her co-worker Kate.
5) Cheyenne Jackson stars in the new Amazon Original Pilot for Onion News Empire, a "scripted comedy set behind the scenes of The Onions News Network that shows just how far journalists will go to stay at the top of their game." Amazon will be considering viewer reviews and ratings as they decide which pilots will be made into series, watch the Onion News Empire pilot now at Amazon.
6) Out singer/songwriters Tegan and Sara released the video for their new single "I Was a Fool" this week. Mae Whitman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) stars in the video. Check it out at Much Music.
7) Sara Bareilles and Jack Antonoff (Fun., co-founder of The Ally Coalition) have premiered a webisode about Bareilles' new single "Brave." They collaborated on the song and Bareilles has said the lyrics were partially inspired by a close friend of hers who was struggling with coming out. 8) Game Face is a new documentary about LGBT pro and college athletes that come out during their careers rather than following retirement. The film, directed by Michiel Thomas and starring trans MMA fighter Fallon Fox, is searching for funding help to cover film and production costs.
