All mothers should be honored and celebrated on Mother's Day.
Founded in 2011, Strong Families set out to do just that: to highlight the diversity often overlooked in the celebration of Mother’s Day — low-income moms, young moms, immigrant moms, single moms, incarcerated moms, moms struggling with substance abuse, and LGBTQ moms in general, among others.
“Just about everyone we spoke with felt mixed at best about typical Mother’s Day celebrations. Our family structures, stories and identities were missing, stereotyped or misunderstood, so we set out to change this,” said Eveline Shen, Executive Director of Forward Together who leads the Strong Families Initiative.
The non-profit commissioned 19 artists to design artwork for the collection, with each designer capturing a different perspective on parenting. Among the figures featured in the artwork is Sylvia Rivera, a Puerto Rican trans woman and veteran of the 1969 Stonewall uprising, and a persistent voice for the rights of people of color and low-income LGBTQ people
