Each week The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) He's Way More Famous Than You, directed by and starring Michael Urie (Partners, Ugly Betty), opens in limited theater release today. After rising star Halley Feiffer loses her boyfriend, agent and career, she realizes she needs to become "way more famous." She turns to her brother Ryan and his boyfriend to help her with making a star-studded film, but her quest for fame may cause her to lose those closest to her. 2) Oxygen Media has released a short documentary The Untold Stories of Motherhood in celebration of Mother's Day this Sunday. The film features a lesbian couple, Jodi and Kim, who have adopted two children, as well as gay couple Ira and Boris who co-parent their two toddlers with their next door neighbor Kirsten, sharing the responsibilities of parenting between the three of them and their two homes. 3) Out comedian Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) and Julie White, who plays a lesbian on NBC's Go On, have joined the indie comedy film Life Partners, starring Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Gillian Jacobs (Community). The film follows best friends Sasha (Meester) and Paige (Jacobs) who have made a pact: Paige will not get married until Sasha has the same right. However when handsome doctor Tim (Adam Brody) meets Paige, the trio struggle to hold on to their relationships as they deal with questions of love, friendship and loyalty.
4) HBO has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette on the upcoming Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. In the clip, the cast and filmmakers discuss how they recreated Liberace's life down to the smallest details in costuming and set design and how they understood and related to his story. Behind the Candelabra premieres on HBO on Sunday, May 26 at 9:00pm ET, watch the making of below.
5) ABC Family's new drama The Fosters, about a "multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms," has released its first clip in anticipation of the series premiere on Monday, June 3. The series centers around police officer Stef and her partner, school Vice Principal Lena, as they raise Brandon, Stef’s biological son from her previous marriage, and the two children they’ve adopted together, Jesus and Mariana. Their already-full household will be disrupted when Lena brings home troubled foster child Callie. 6) Neil Patrick Harris will return to host The 67th Annual Tony Awards live from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 9, airing on CBS. This will be Harris' fourth time hosting the Tony Awards. Playwright and civil rights advocate Larry Kramer will receive the Isabelle Stevenson award at this year's event and several LGBT-inclusive plays and musicals were also nominated for Tony honors, with Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein's Kinky Boots leading the pack with 13 nominations.
7) The BBC America supernatural drama Orphan Black has been renewed for a 10 episode second season to air in 2014. The series follows outcast Sarah whose life changes when she assumes the identity of her doppelganger who dies in front of her. She comes to learn that she and the woman are clones of each other - and there are more of them out there. Sarah turns to her out foster brother and best friend Felix for help investigating her mysterious origins. Get to know Felix below.
8) Trans performer Justin Vivian Bond is raising funds for a music video for the track "Golden Age of Hustlers," in "homage to San Francisco's legendary chanteuse Bambi Lake." The video will mix a performance from Bond with live scenes from local artists, and images from San Francisco's LGBT community in the 1980s. Learn more about the project at the Kickstarter page.
