One Million Moms meet Millions of Moms for Love

At this point most people are familiar with the organization "One Million Moms" and their failed boycotts. If you're not, you can see some of what they've tried (and failed) to do recently here and here. There hasn't really been a counter group yet. Until now. A straight Texas mom of two named Darcy Christ has started "Millions of Moms for Love" on Facebook. This group was started in response to OMM's new campaign to shame Disney for "going along" with Gay Day.

June 1st is the 23rd annual Gay Day at Disney World in Orlando. Though Disney does not actually sponsor the event, they have never shown anything but support for it.

On their website, OMM claims that "On June 1, unsuspecting families will witness a well-orchestrated event that Disney says they have no control over. Disney has taken no action to stop this, which leaves families stunned and offended. So instead of a normal day at this popular theme park, parents will be angry at the harm this causes families."

Their call to action demands that, "Disney should monitor this day and event for public displays of affection and require proper conduct and appropriate attire. This should be policed but especially on Gay Day"

The organizers at OMM use claims of protecting the family to mask and spread their homophobia. Why else should proper conduct and appropriate attire be policed "especially on Gay Day"? Gay people do not put themselves on display at Disney World for Gay Day. The day exists so that LGBT people may have a day in the park among their community. They do not cause harm to anyone's family; many of them have families. It is not simply for LGBT people or couples but families with LGBT parents or children, as well as allied families.

"Millions of Moms for Love" is fighting back asking people to send thank you notes online to Disney. In part the notes say, "While Gay Days® is not a sanctioned-Disney event, we always feel welcomed at the park on this special day and throughout the year and don’t expect this to change because of a homophobic group who is encouraging you to discriminate against the LGBT community. Thank you for being a corporate leader that does not tolerate discrimination in any form."

Walt Disney Corporation earned a perfect score on the HRC corporate equality index in 2012.
