GLAAD was on the ground in Dallas as the Boy Scouts of America annouced a change in its discriminatory policy that banned gay Scouts and leaders. Openly gay young men will now be allowed to join the Boy Scouts after GLAAD's yearlong campaign calling for an end to discrimination in Scouting. Though this is a major step for the Boy Scouts, there is more work to be done and GLAAD will continue working to secure equality for gay parents and adults in the Boy Scouts. Read more.
Following a non-committal statement from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, which didn't advise Catholics to vote either way, GLAAD outlined and lifted up the broad denominational support for lifting the Boy Scouts' ban on gay Scouts and leaders. Supportive denominations inlcude the Episcopal Church, Lutherans, Methodists, the National Jewish Committee on Scouting, and more. Read more.
GLAAD is bringing attention to a wave of anti-LGBT violence in New York City. GLAAD shared reports and photos of a 'Take Back the Night' rally, and partnered with the Anti-Violence Project to support a rally and march in the West Village after the murder of a gay man of color. Read more.
GLAAD is celebrating with Minnesota as it becomes the 12th state to enact marriage equality. GLAAD's graphic announcing the Minnesota victory was shared more than 7,000 times, and GLAAD's Ross Murray worte an op-ed for Advocate.com on conversations he had with his grandmother about bringing marriage equality to his home state.
