Following the Boy Scouts' decision to repeal the ban on gay Scouts, GLAAD has been working with various media outlets to show the broad faith support for dropping the ban. Ross Murray, GLAAD's Director of News and Faith Initiatives, appeared on MSNBC, the Washington Post, Time Magazine, and ABC News, to talk about denominational reactions to inclusive scouting. GLAAD's Monica Trasandes did several interviews in Spanish-Language media last week about the importance of the recent change in the Boy Scouts of America's policy allowing the participation of gay youth. She discussed the topic on Sin Limites on the broadcast channel CNN Latino and on "El Show de Erazno y la Chokolata" the radio show heard nationally on over 15 stations in California, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. She discussed the Boy Scouts policy as well as the importance of immigration reform for LGBT people and their families on the San Francisco Bay Area Spanish-language radio station KIQI AM 1010. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America elected the first openly gay and Native American bishop on Friday. GLAAD worked with Rev. Dr. R. Guy Erwin to prepare him for the possibility of becoming elected bishop of the Southwest California Synod, providing best practices for speaking to the media and support. GLAAD was able to break the news of Dr. Erwin's election on Friday evening and get it to media outlets. Dr. Erwin's story has appeared in several media outlets, including USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, and The Advocate.
GLAAD spoke out against anti-LGBT activists targeting the cartoon show SheZow, which features a 12-year-old boy named Guy who becomes a superhero by putting on a magic ring. Right-wing activists claimed that the show will confuse children about gender, but GLAAD's Rich Ferraro pointed out Jerry Falwell's similarly laughable claims that Tinky Winky of The Teletubbies was gay because he carried a purse. GLAAD Board Member Jennifer Finney Boylan also spoke about SheZow on MSNBC. Read more.
