Having grown up "in the black church" Williams expressed having felt shut out because he identifies as a gay man. The inspiration for creating God Loves Uganda was to "explore the power of religion to transform lives or destroy them." While in Africa filming Prudence, Williams took a trip to Uganda, Uganda-where for over decades the American evangelical movement has been sending missionaries and money, building schools, manning hospitals and training pastors.
