Each week The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1)If you're in New York this weekend or in Los Angeles the weekend of June 21, besure to attend a screening of Call Me Kuchu, which has won numerous awards in film festivals around the country over the last year. From directors Malika Zouhali-Worrall and Katherine Fairfax Wright, Call Me Kuchu explores the LGBT community in Uganda and highlights the work of Ugandan LGBT activist David Kato, who fought tirelessly to stop Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill before his murder in January 2011. 2) Sony Pictures Classics has announced that John Krokidas' film Kill Your Darlings will be screened in limited New York and Los Angeles theaters beginning October 18th and later released nationwide. The film focuses on the life of gay poet Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), a Columbia University student in 1944, who is introduced to the world of literature and poetry by classmate Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan). Together with two other classmates, the boys lay the foundation for what is now called the Beat movement.
3) From photographer and director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders comes a series of interviews with LGBT individuals, both famous and not, woven together to form The OUT List, airing on HBO Thursday, June 27. The documentary, produced by Greenfield and out filmmaker Sam McConnell, features everyone from Ellen DeGeneres and Neil Patrick Harris to Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez. 4) Ricky Martin is back with a brand-new single, "Come With Me," recorded in Sydney, Australia with producers DNA Songs. Martin is currently a vocal coach on the Australian version of The Voice and is set to perform his new song during the season finale. Listen to "Come With Me" below.
5) Kinky Boots, the Broadway production produced by Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig, will launch its first national tour in Las Vegas in September 2014. The news was announced after the musical walked away from the Tonys with six trophies, including Best Musical, and iconic LGBT activist Cyndi Lauper was honored for her original score in the show. The production tells the story of a British shoe factory that avoids bankruptcy by manufacturing thigh high boots for drag queens.
6) The 2013 Recording Academy Honors will take place on June 25 in Manhattan, where artists will receive accolades for furthering and maintaining the work of the creative community. Among those slated to perform is bisexual singer Joan Osborne, best known for her 1995 single "One of Us." Grammy-winning lesbian performer Melissa Etheridge will also be in attendance as an honoree.
7) To celebrate Pride month, Gwist has kicked off a 10-episode YouTube series titled Stonewall: Profiles of Pride. The profiles includes stories from people living with HIV, bi-national couples dealing with immigration laws, and advocates working to promote LGBT equality. Produced in 2009 via OURsceneTV, the series can be found on Gwist's YouTube page.
8) J.D. Walker, director of The Postwoman, is requesting your help to reach her Kickstarter campaign goal of $25,000 by early August. The film, set in Oakland, California, stars Margaret Kemp (Children of God) as Alyssa, a mother searching for the words to reveal her sexual orientation to her ex-husband, two young daughters, and the rest of her family.
