Following the launch of their Kickstarter campaign earlier this month, GaymerCon announced that they have far exceeded their original $25,000 goal. With just a few hours left to go on the campaign, the first-ever gaming and tech convention focusing on “LGBT Geek Culture” has raised over $75,000.
Set to take place in August of 2013, GaymerCon will bring together LGBT gamers and their allies from all over the world for a celebration of all things geeky, including video games, comics, and technology. The organizers hope the convention can help “shape a more tolerant and safer space in gaming.”
Now that they’ve surpassed their original goal, GaymerCon will add a Saturday night concert to its schedule, a Sunday brunch for higher level donors, and fly in a celebrity “Boss of Honor.” If they make it to their final stretch goal of $100,000, they’ll use the fund to create a “Gaymerconnect” app, which will allow LGBT gamers to find fellow LGBT online competitors and teammates to play with.
They’re getting some impressive industry support and appreciation for their initiative as well, such as the below video from the Xbox Live team explaining why they think the convention is important.
Keep an eye out for more GaymerCon news in the coming year.
