GLAAD sponsors first annual LGBTQ Latino film festival

GLAAD is proud to sponsor a launch event for the first annual Latino/a Queer Film Festival (LQFF) on Sunday, June 21 in Los Angeles, CA.

As a prelude to a larger festival happening in the fall, and in honor of the festival's city of creation, the Latina/o Queer Showcase: Queer and in LA will feature films by and about LGBTQ Latinos that reflect the struggles, lives, and achievements of their community in Los Angeles. The films in this showcase will compete in the larger fall festival with a number of additional films from around the world.

Some notable films include:

GLAAD Media Award-nominated drama "Mosquita y Mari"  follows two Chicana high school girls in Southeast Los Angeles whose intimate friendship challenges their ideas of identity.
 

"Gay Latino LA: Coming of Age" is a documentary that follows the lives of three young Latino gay men – Carlos from South Los Angeles, Alex, an undocumented Mexican immigrant in Downtown Los Angeles, and Brian, a recent college graduate and current GLAAD staff member from East Hollywood – and their journey of self-discovery and growth over a two-year period.

"Wildness" tells the story of a weekly performance art/dance party called Wildness – one of the most unique, electrifying and important queer parties in Los Angeles nightlife history – and the conflict that arose when a group of queer avant-garde artists of color intersected with a community of Latina transgender immigrant women at historic bar The Silver Platter in the MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

"Inspired: the Voices against Prop 8" chronicles the re-awakening of the LGBT movement in Southern California following the passage of Proposition 8.The film interviews several people from all walks of life inspired to action in ways they never dreamed, to a conclusion they never expected. 

Others films screening at this showcase are: ,"You're Dead to Me" by Adelina Anthony;   "LA Queer History" by Gregory Davila; "The Honor 41 Project" by Alberto Mendoza; "The Rookie and the Runner" by Augie Robles; "Rad Queers: Clowns" by Graham Kolbeins; "Kiss Me" by Jules Nurish; "El Abuelo by Dino Dinco; "Sin Vergüenza" by Alta Med; "The Baby Cries" by Mario J Novoa.

Other community sponsors include the Latino Equality Alliance, Payasos L.A., Bienestar, Alta Med, AIDS Project Los Anngeles (APLA), Mr. Leather LA, API Equality-LA, Gender Justice LA, Trans Latina Coalition, Qulture.org, Corral Consulting, HONOR PAC, Metropolitan Community Church, LA Gay and Lesbian Center, GLAAD, Brown and Out, Colors and the Los Angeles Latino Theater Company.
