The final wave of nominations for the Teen Choice Awards were announced today. Among the nominees are several LGBT-inclusive shows, movies and music.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is nominated for Choice Movie: Drama, and star Ezra Miller is nominated for Choice Movie Breakout. Miller plays gay teen Patrick, who is in a secret relationship with closeted football player Brad. In a 2012 interview with Out, Miller came out as queer.
Pitch Perfect is nominated for Choice Movie: Comedy and Skyfall's Javier Bardem is nominated for Choice Movie Villain. Skyfall is also nominated for Choice Film: Action.
In the music categories, a nomination for Choice Music Breakout Group goes to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The two have been strong allies to the LGBT community. In October 2012, they released a video for their song "Same Love" in support of marriage equality, particularly in their home state of Washington. Macklemore also was the first non-athlete to make a "You Can Play" video in support of LGBT inclusion in sports.
He has openly discussed his love and support for his gay uncles. After the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA, he released a statement saying, "By declaring DOMA unconstitutional, the Supreme Court has stated that the U.S. Government can no longer deny federal benefits to same sex couples. This means that people like my uncles, who have been in a committed relationship for over 20 years, will now receive the same rights that my parents have." The pair is also nominated for Choice Summer Music Star: Group.
On the television side, Glee's Heather Morris is nominated for Choice TV Female Scene Stealer. LGBT-inclusive show The Fosters received a nomination for Choice Summer TV Show. The Fosters follows a interracial lesbian couple raising a multi-ethnic mix of foster and biological kids. The show's co-creator Peter Paige was on the groundbreaking TV series Queer as Folk and Executive Producer Jennifer Lopez has spoken about her lesbian aunt as an influence on her decision to produce the show.
Pretty Little Liars received a nomination in the Choice Summer TV Show category. Pretty Little Liars has woven the love life of lesbian character Emily Fields into the sordid mystery at the center of the show's plot.
