This week, the $30,000 fundraising goal for activists Dream Hampton and Natasha Miller's documentary film TransParentwas reached on Kickstarter.com.

TransParent is a documentary that tells the story of Shelley "Treasure" Hilliard, a 19-year-old transgender woman of color from Detroit whose brutal murder was not tried as a hate crime. The documentary, as Dream Hampton describes, is more than just a film created in honor of Shelley Hilliard's life and her mother Lyniece Nelson's commitment to justice for the trans community—TransParent is "about projections and perceptions…communities misrepresented and misunderstood."

Dream Hampton, known for her longtime coverage of hiphop culture and her film work (among them "I AM ALI" and "Black August") is a Detroit native and the director of TransParent. Natasha Miller, the producer of TransParent, is a Detroit Kresge artist fellowship recipient, a performance poet, an LGBT activist, and a queer woman of color who was born and raised in Detroit.

GLAAD supports strong and lifelong allies to the trans community like Dream Hampton and Natasha Miller, whose work seeks to bring light to trans history and share the underlying humanity of people living together as a community.
