On Friday, the University of North Carolina's Board of Governors voted to ban gender-neutral housing at all seventeen UNC campuses and threaten the safety and well-being of LGBT students living there. GLAAD worked with Campus Pride to call for supporters and media to attend and cover the meeting and bring public scrutiny to the decision-making process. Read more.
GLAAD supported South Carolina University student after he was removed from a work-study position for being gay. Stephen Lovegrave was fired from his job as a resident advisor after he began posting on the Internet about being gay and Christian. GLAAD provided assitance with discussions with the media, such as NBC and On Top Magazine, as well as support for Stephen and helped him get his story into wider media circles. Read more.
GLAAD has been helping to spread the word about a new play, The Anointed, to media outlets and the public. The play illustrates the story of four African-American ministers dealing with their own personal struggles with faith and sexuality. A staged reading is being held Friday as a partnership between the community arts program, A Mile In My Shoes, and NYC Black Pride. Read more.
Last week, GLAAD's Entertainment Media team worked alongside Lifetime to get the word out and encourage viewers to tune into an episode of Project Runway about marriage equality. Jesse Tyler Ferguson appeared as the guest judge on the episode and challenged designers to create unique looks with Tie the Knot bowties. The challenge so inspired one of the designers that he proposed to his partner of 18 years during the runway judging ceremony. GLAAD also met with Lifetime last week to discuss possible partnerships on upcoming projects and opportunities to include increasingly diverse LGBT images on the network's roster of shows. Read more.
GLAAD's national spokesman Omar Sharif, Jr. talked with HuffPost Live about the anti-LGBT laws that have recently been passed in Russia. Sharif called the laws "draconian" and "respressive." As an example of the law's harm, Sharif pointed to his T-shirt, which read "lesbian gay bisexual transgender pride" and would be considered against Russia's laws as "propaganda." "This T-shirt alone would be enough to have me jailed, be enough to have me fined, to have me deported and to allow me to never come back if I was an athlete, a spectator or a member of the media," he said. Rusa LGBT also appeard on a HuffPo Live segment. GLAAD partnered with the group and provided training about best practices for interviews to communicate their message as effectively as possible.
