Just last week, GLAAD told you about Germany's President Joachim Gauk and European Union Commissioner Viviane Reding stating that they will be boycotting the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as a statement against Russia's anti-LGBT laws. Today we add French President François Hollande to the growing list of world leaders boycotting the Sochi Olympics. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius declared on Europe 1 radio that "There are no plans to attend. Top French officials have no plans to be there."
With the Sochi Olympics less than 2 months away from starting, it will be interesting to see how many other world leaders will join the boycott publicly. The United States has not made any statement about joining the boycott, yet there are no plans currently in place for any US official to attend. Maybe the fact that the United States announced that First Lady Michelle Obama would be attending the Summer Olympics in London four months prior to the start of the games gives us a hint about any US officials attending Sochi.
