Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) G.B.F. comes to theaters in limited release today. It's the story of a high school student who accidentally comes out and finds himself being fought over by three prom queen candidates who all want him to be their G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). G.B.F. stars Paul Iacono, Michael J. Willett, Sasha Pieterse, Natasha Lyonne, and Megan Mullaly. You can watch the film's trailer below.
2) Another comedy about gay teens (also co-starring Megan Mullaly) is the upcoming Date and Switch, which is set to be released on Valentine's Day. The film has been in the works for a few years as part of Lionsgate's microbudget initiative, and stars Nicholas Braun and Hunter Cope as two high school students who make a pact to lose their virginity before prom, but things get complicated when one of them comes out as "a gay dude." The film costars Modern Family's Sarah Hyland, and you can watch the new trailer below.
3) WGN America will be creating a ten-part mini-series based on the Ten Commandments with each episode (and commandment) to be helmed by a different director. Among them will be out directors Gus Van Sant and Lee Daniels, while Bruce Cohen is co-producing.
4) Though The Normal Heart doesn't premiere until May, HBO has already commissioned a potential sequel from playwright and activist Larry Kramer. Director Ryan Murphy and stars Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, and Jim Parsons would likely return should the project move forward. The Normal Heart is a semi-autobiographical play about the beginning of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in New York City and the LGBT community's response.
5) The Fosters returned this week for its mid-season premiere to fantastic ratings, and will soon begin a new story arc with guest star Rosie O'Donnell. She will play a social worker named Rita who oversees an adolescent women's group home called Girls United, where foster daughter Callie is placed after she runs away. 6) CBS has renewed its entire daytime lineup, including The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless, both of which feature LGBT characters. Out actors Joanna Johnson and Greg Rikaart will continue their roles on the shows.
7) John Grant's music video for his new song "Glacier" is a visual lesson in LGBT history. His inspiration came from “[wishing he] had heard somebody talking about the fact, you know, being gay didn’t make me less of a human than other people." The acclaimed musician was recently nominated for a Brit Award, and you can read more about him in our artist profile here. Check out the video below.
8) Fortune Feimster will costar in Matt Hubbard's Fox pilot about a women's college that begins accepting men, in which she plays an out, proud, and popular lesbian athlete. Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and Pam Fryman are also producing.
9) Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly has announced that Glee
will be set exclusively in New York after the show's 100th episode - set to air sometime in March. He said that some but not all characters not yet in New York would move there, but did not specify who. Reilly also confirmed that the sixth season of Glee will be the last.
10) The Foxy Merkins, a "comedy about lesbian hookers," has been accepted to Sundance, and is looking for help to fund their distribution. A take on male buddy comedies and hustler films, The Foxy Merkins stars Lisa Haas and Jackie Monahan as prostitutes who cater to a lesbian clientele. This is Madeleine Olnek's second feature film, following her comedy Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, which also premiered at Sundance. Watch the Kickstarter campaign trailer below.
