34 Couples, gay and straight, will be married live at tonight’s Grammy Awards during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s performance of their Grammy-nominated marriage equality anthem, “Same Love," The New York Times reports. Lewis said the weddings “will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.” The group is nominated for a total of seven Grammys, including song of the year for “Same Love.”
Madonna will join out singer Mary Lambert as a featured vocalist during the performance and Queen Latifah will officiate the weddings.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who served as Spirit Day ambassadors with GLAAD last year, recently received a MTV Video Music Award for Best Video with a Social Message.
“I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy,” Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which presents the Grammys, told The New York Times.
Check out other Grammy nominees who are LGBT or allies here and be sure to watch the performance tonight at 8.pm. eastern time on CBS.
