Spirit Day is almost here. On October 19, millions of Americans will once again wear purple in a stand against bullying and to show their support for LGBT youth.
This year, GLAAD is counting down to Spirit Day with 19 Days of Action – quick and easy steps you can take each day to help stand up to bullying.
Ready to get started?
#SpiritDay: 19 Days of Action – Day 13, October 13, 2012
Get your purple American Apparel gear! On #SpiritDay, purple, the color that represents 'Spirit' on the rainbow flag, is worn in support of LGBT youth. Until October 19, you can receive 10% off any purple item you order from American Apparel when you enter the promo code: SPIRIT. An additional 10% of the proceeds your purple purchases will be donated to GLAAD!
In June this year, American Apparel teamed up with GLAAD and released a new line of tees in honor of LGBT Pride Month and featured its first openly transgender model in its ad campaign. GLAAD worked with AA to cast the ads, which featured openly transgender model Isis King and current and former GLAAD staff members. 15% of all proceeds from that line would benefit GLAAD's work, and AA employees joined GLAAD staff in LGBT Pride marches across the country. American Apparel's efforts resulted in positive visibility for transgender models like Isis and earned media attention in fashion and mainstream press for LGBT Pride Month, and its LGBT Pride 2012 campaign was nominated for a GLAAD Amplifier Award.
Another way to celebrate Spirit Day is to encourage the presidential candidates to come out against bullying by signing a new petition asking them to wear purple on October 19th for Spirit Day.
The petition was created by Katy Butler, Spirit Day Ambassador, who previously created a Change.org petition calling on the MPAA to change the rating of BULLY from ‘R’ to ‘PG-13’. The rating was finally changed, helping bring this important film to young people across the nation.
Don't forget that you can text PURPLE to 80888 right now to support the important work of GLAAD, GLSEN and The Trevor Project with a $5 donation.
