U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn made final a ruling issued earlier that struck down Kentucky's ban on recognizing marriages for same-sex couples performed in other jurisdictions. In the original ruling, Heyburn cited the historic 2013 Supreme Court ruling on the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act" while striking down the portion of Kentucky's 2004 constitutional amendment that said, “only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Kentucky.”
The suit was originally filed by several same-sex couples, including Gregory Bourke and Michael Deleon, who married in Canada in 2004. GLAAD previously worked with Bourke to end the Boy Scouts of America's ban on gay youth.
