This Saturday, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) is holding its 9th annual Small Works for Big Change art benefit. SRLP's biggest fundraiser of the year, Small Works for Big Change is a major community event for cutting-edge established and emerging New York-based artists to showcase their work. The event raises money to support SRLP's crucial work to provide free legal services and build movement power with trans and gender non-conforming low-income people and people of color in New York City. GLAAD is proud to sponsor this impactful community event.
Small Works for Big Change will be held at Jack Studios in New York City on Saturday, March 8th. Advocates Reina Gossett and Tiq Milan will be hosting the event, and the headlining attraction is a silent auction featuring works by queer, trans and gender non-conforming artists, starting at affordable prices as low as $10. All of the money raised at Small Works for Big Change goes directly towards SRLP’s work of building a movement for gender self-determination centered in racial and economic justice. See a list of this year's participating artists and view their work at www.srlp.org/bigchange.
“Small Works for Big Change is a wonderful entry-point for community members to get involved in our work to build a movement for self-determination and the liberation of all people,” says Reina Gossett, the event's co-host and SRLP's Director of Membership. “In our work to fight against systemic oppression, we need to remember to cultivate a movement that also celebrates our creativity and resilience. Small Works gives us a chance to showcase the imaginative, visionary, and transformative work that sustains and inspires our movements. It’s truly irresistible.”
In addition to the auction, Small Works for Big Change will feature music by DJ Precolumbian, performances by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, raffle prizes, and the first-ever, Small Works Pop-Up Shop. The after party, DE COLORES, is being hosted by Azucar in Brooklyn, and all door proceeds will benefit SRLP. Small Works for Big Change's many sponsors and partners include the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art, Visual AIDS, GLAAD, the Feminist Press, and many more. Since 2005, over 60 host committee members and more than 250 radical, transgressive, and cutting-edge artists have donated over 300 visionary works of art and countless hours of hard work to make SRLP's Small Works for Big Change happen.
