Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Geography Club, a GLAAD Media Award nominee for Outstanding Film—Limited Release, is being released on DVD this coming Tuesday, March 11. The DVD will include a commentary by the director and writers, a commentary by cast members, and an hour-long documentary called The Making of Geography Club. Geography Club is about a group of closeted gay and lesbian high school students who form a support group to deal with pressures from their peers and parents.
2) Out swimmer Diana Nyad has joined the cast of Dancing With The Stars. Last year Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Nyad will be teamed with professional dancer Henry Byalikov. Catch her on the season premiere on Monday, March 17 on ABC.
3) Ross Katz, producer of The Laramie Project, has signed on to write Out At Home: The Glenn Burke Story. Glenn Burke was an major league baseball player in the 1970s who, while not out as gay to the general public, was out to his teammates and management. The screenplay will be based on Burke's 1995 memoir, with actress Jamie Lee Curtis and Robert Horowitz producing. Burke is also credited with inventing the high five.
4) Documentary I Thought It Was Forever, which looks at married couples when a spouse comes out, will screen March 17 in Burbank as part of the Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival. The festival is in its ninth year and will run March 15-20, find out more and get tickets here.
5) Dragon Age: Inquisition, set for release this fall, has released a new trailer. In this third installment of BioWare's Dragon Age series, players will have more romance options and, as in the previous two games, players will be able to play as characters with a range of sexual orientations. Inquisition continues BioWare and parent company EA's history of releasing LGBT-inclusive games, including the Mass Effect games and The Sims. Out lead writer David Gaider has spoken out against critics who want to remove LGBT content in the games, saying "considering what [LGBT content] means to those fans who receive that validation almost nowhere else, it’s not too much to demand a bit of tolerance and compassion from the portion of the audience for whom this content is not even intended."
6) The Bomb Girls movie has a release date! Bomb Girls: Facing The Enemy will premiere on March 27 on Global in Canada. Bomb Girls is a Canadian show that ran for two seasons on ReelzChannel in the U.S. and has been resurrected following cancellation thanks to a determined fan base. Many main characters will return for the film, including Ali Liebert as Betty McRae, a lesbian munitions worker during World War II who falls in love with her co-worker Kate.
7) The Writers Guild of America's Gay & Lesbian Writers Committee is hosting an evening with ABC Family's The Fosters. The Fosters co-creators and executive producers Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg, executive producer Joanna Johnson, co-producer Priscilla Porianda, and ABC Family director of programming Robert Prinz will take part in "An Evening with ABC Family's The Fosters" on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Writers Guild of America headquarters in Los Angeles. The event will include a preview of the season finale and a panel moderated by Anne Stockwell, author and former Editor-in-Chief of The Advocate. 8) Indiewire has a new blog, /bent, that describes itself as "the queerest blog on Indiewire's network." /bent deals with how LGBT culture is represented in film and other media. They deal with current issues in addition to having retrospective features such as "Rewatching the Queer Canon." You can follow /bent on Indiewire to keep up with all their posts.
9) Out actor Stephen Fry will be narrating a UK Channel 4 special called Our Gay Wedding: The Musical. Composer Benjamin Till and actor Nathan Taylor will not only be getting married on screen, but also writing the music and lyrics for their wedding spectacular. Expect guest appearances, though details have not yet been announced. The special will be released sometime after March 29, when marriage equality goes into effect in England and Wales.
10) An Act of Love needs your help! An Act of Love is a Pauley Perrette-produced documentary about Reverend Frank Schaefer, the United Methodist minister from a small Pennsylvania town who was defrocked after officiating his son's wedding to his husband. Rev. Schaefer's defrocking has catapulted him and his family into the spotlight and led to a larger conversation about LGBT inclusion in the United Methodist Church.
