Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?
Be sure to check out GLAAD's Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT equality through news, entertainment, and online media.
Last week, a young transgender man was beaten in a bathroom in Northern California—the second anti-trans attack at the high school. GLAAD worked with Noticiero Telemundo on the story, connecting the reporter with Los Angeles advocate Victoria Ruiz and helping her prepare for the interview. Victoria did a great job expressing the need for schools to do more to stop anti-LGBT violence. We also worked to correct a very biased piece on so-called conversion therapies. The piece, done in Mexico, relied far too much on a pastor claiming to "cure," gay people and drug addicts and far too little on science, facts and the experiences of real people hurt by these anti-gay schemes. The producers have committed to doing a more accurate story.
Working with grassroots folks on the ground, GLAAD broke the news of two Russian LGBT advocates detained for protesting Ukraine invasion. Reyda Linn and Nix Nemeni have taken part in nearly every LGBT demonstration in Moscow over the past year, including the demonstration at Red Square, in which they were arrested. They were sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest. GLAAD continues to bring the stories of LGBT Russians to mainstream media. Read more here.
GLAAD worked with filmmakers to announce NCIS star Pauley Perrette has joined the documentary film An Act of Love as Executive Producer. An Act of Love follows the story of Rev. Frank Schaefer, who was stripped of his credentials as a minister in the United Methodist Church in December of 2013. He was convicted in a church trial for officiating the wedding of his son to another man. Read more here.
Monica Trasandes, GLAAD's Director of Spanish-Language and Latino media was interviewed for a show in Spanish called "Latino Communicators," as part of Cal State Fullerton's journalism program. The university graduates more Latino Communications majors than any other in the country. Watch the interview here.
GLAAD celebrated the kick-off of Bisexual Health Awareness Month, brought to you by the Bisexual Resource Center. This year's theme, "Bi the Way, Our Health Matters Too!", will address disparities in physical and mental health facing the bisexual community. Created by the US' oldest nationally-focused bi organization, Bisexual Health Awareness Month is the first social media campaign to address this topic. Check out the information and the graphics.
