Sylvia Rivera Law Project hosted their annual art auction, Small Works for Big Change over the weekend at Jack Studios in New York City. All the art work featured was done by transgender artists who have been or who are currently incarcerated. Sylvia Rivera works to increase the voice and visibility of low-income people and transgender or gender non-conforming people of color. The donations make it possible for them to provide direct services, skill building trainings for service providers and community members, and to mobilize the community to organize and improve the conditions of their lives.
The event was hosted by GLAAD Senior Media Strategist Tiq Milan and SRLP's Director of Membership Reina Gossett. Hundreds of community members and advocates bidded on drawings, photographs, and paintings ranging from $10- $500. The money raised will go towards funding transportation to members, providing legal information to incarcerated transgender people and name change fees.
GLAAD and The Sylvia Rivera Law Project partnered on to create a PSA discussing healthcare inequality and the need for transgender health to be covered by medicaid. The short video has over 100,000 youtube views.
