Out lesbian Angelica Lozano, formerly city councilwoman in Bogota has been elected to the Congress in Colombia the Washington Blade reports. Lozano helped establish what she hails as the first LGBT Community Center in Latin America in 2013. She also lists among her achievements infrastructure projects and projects related to establishing safe bicycling routes. In order to win she garnered over 30,000 votes. The Colombian LGBTI community is fighting for full equality after victories on the civil union front. Activists say that until there is a cultural shift in the country, the rights on paper will not be fully realized and LGBTI people will not have access to true and complete justice.
