For the first time since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, AIDS is no longer one of the top ten causes of death in the city. Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said AIDS fell off the list for 2012.
This is the first time AIDS has not been on the list since 1983.
“It’s a tribute to the efforts that have been made...in tackling this epidemic. We are seeing some success,” Bassett said.
GLAAD was founded in response to the New York Post's defamatory and sensationalized coverage of AIDS.
