Twitter CEO Dick Costolo joined employees on Friday in wearing for #SpiritDay in a stand against bullying and to show their support for LGBT youth. The company's LGBTQA group, Twitter Open, tweeted a photo of some of the staff with Costolo, saying, "We are wearing purple today to show our support for #LGBT youth and to stand up against #bullying #SpiritDay."

Twitter has been intrumental to the success of this year's #SpiritDay, with celebrities, students, LGBT people and allies taking to the platform to show their support. The volume of tweets about Spirit Day grew so large that the hashtag #SpiritDay was trending for parts of the day in the United States.

Other tech companies supported Spirit Day as well.

Even President Obama and the White House went purple on Twitter for Spirit Day.
