GLAAD reached out to major sponsors of the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade. After GLAAD discussed the event's exclusionary, anti-LGBT policy with the sponsors, Heineken withdrew its support for the parade. Guinness soon followed suit. Additionally, Guinness released a statement "supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all," and reinforcing committment "to work with community leaders to ensure that future parades have an inclusionary policy." GLAAD worked with LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent to place an ad in response to an offensive church sign that was making the rounds in the media. The ad reminds readers that LGBT people have always been a part of the Harlem, African-American, and faith communities, and signatories include the Ali Forney Center, the largest LGBT youth homeless shelter in the country; Harlem Pride; Bishop Yvette Flunder, Presiding Prelate of the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries; the historic Riverside Church; the National Black Justice Coalition; and GLAAD. GLAAD has called on CrossFit to end its discriminatory policy against transgender athletes. After disqualifying Chloie Jonsson and telling her that transgender women aren't women, GLAAD and Chris Mosier of Trans*Athlete launched a MoveOn.org petition, calling on CrossFit to to implement an inclusive policy that allows transgender athletes to compete as their consistent and lived gender. GLAAD broke the news that anti-LGBT activist Michael Brown has been stirring anti-LGBT animus in Peru. After anti-LGBT activists pushed draconian anti-LGBT laws in Uganda, Russia, and other countries, they are now turning their eyes to Peru as the next target. Read more here.
GLAAD worked with the Palm Center, a research initiative of San Francisco State University's Department of Political Science, to promote their report challenging the United States ban on transgender people serving openly in the military. The report concluded that there was no medical basis for preventing trans soldiers from serving openly. GLAAD also placed trans service members in the media to tell their story. Read more here.
