On Ellen last week, pop star Jennifer Lopez appeared to talk about her new album, her role as a judge on American Idol, and her motivation for becoming an executive producer on ABC Family's hit show The Fosters.

Lopez describes the show, which stars two lesbian moms, as a "beautiful family drama about life and love. That's really all it's about - family." She went on to say it was the memory of her favorite aunt, who was a lesbian, which ultimately led her to produce the show "because she did have a tough time growing up and being gay" and she would have wanted to make her aunt proud.

On April 12 in Los Angeles, Lopez will be honored at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards with the Vanguard Award for her outspoken support of LGBT equality. In announcing the award, GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said, "Through her work to bring The Fosters to life and by consistently speaking out as a powerful ally, Jennifer Lopez has not only sent a message of acceptance, but inspired new support for our community among her many fans around the globe. Family is about love, and that's a message Jennifer has shared with millions through her groundbreaking work on The Fosters."

The Fosters aired its season finale last night, but you can get caught up with full episodes on ABC Family's website.

In January, GLAAD announced 93 nominees in 20 English-language categories, and 37 Spanish-language nominees in nine categories. Nominees for the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards can be found here. The Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards ceremony will take place April 12 at the Beverly Hilton, while the New York ceremony will take place on May 3 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
