A couple have brought a suit to have their relationship recognized.  In 1999 Puerto Rican lawmakers banned the recognition of same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.

The couple bringing the suit, Ada Conde Vidal and Ivonne Álvarez Velez, have been together for 14 years and married a decade ago in Massachusetts.  The couple told the Washington Blade that they are raising a daughter together and recently Conde notes, Alvarez wasn't able to make any medical decisions for their daughteAda Conder when she went through heart surgery.

Pedro Julio Serrano, longtime activist and spokesperson for Puerto Rico Para Tod@s is asking the Puerto Rican Governor and his administration not to defend this law in courts according to Primera Hora.  He also invited other Puerto Rican LGBT couples to join the suit and declare their unions.
