Last week, CNN's Carol Costello hosted a segment about the anti-gay American Family Association's protest of Southern Poverty Law Center's "Mix it up at lunch day" - because of AFA's bizarre claim that encouraging kids to make new friends promotes some kind of "gay agenda."
Costello interviewed AFA spokesperson Bryan Fischer. But, like any good journalist, she wanted to give her audience the whole story, not just the parts that Fischer was comfortable discussing on national television. So she confronted him with a statement he had made claiming that the Nazis were, quite literally, gay.
Straight from Fischer's profile at GLAAD's Commentator Accounability Project (CAP), here's that claim again:
Hitler recruited around him homosexuals to make up his Stormtroopers, they were his enforcers, they were his thugs. And Hitler discovered that he could not get straight soldiers to be savage and brutal and vicious enough to carry out his orders, but that homosexual solders basically had no limits and the savagery and brutality they were willing to inflict on whomever Hitler sent them after. So he surrounded himself, virtually all of the Stormtroopers, the Brownshirts, were male homosexuals."
Needless to say, Fischer was less than thrilled with Costello's audience being made aware of the extent of his anti-gay animus. He also wasn't happy with her cutting the interview off when it was clear he was going to start making bizarre claims about the "health risks" of being gay.
So on his radio show, he called her part of the "Gay Gestapo." (Which is strange, because I thought Fischer believed the actual Gestapo was gay? Wouldn't this be redundant?)
Anyway, Costello responded with a smile. If the "Gay Gestapo" aims to provide an audience with context about a hate-driven anti-gay activist, and actively works to stop the spread of blatant misinformation, then she said she's a "proud, card-carrying member."
