Gender Proud launched on International Transgender Day of Visibility. Gender Proud is an advocacy organization working to create a universal right to change one's gender marker without having to undergo any surgeries that may not be wanted or necessary for an individual's transgender identity. The organization will start targeting countries where gender marker legislation is at it's tipping point; they'll work closely with transgender justice organizations on-the-ground, to advocate for more progressiver gender marker policy.
Gender Proud is founded by Geena Rocero, a fashion model from the Phillipines who experienced first hand the barriers to changing her identification as an international traveler.
Geena also shared her story the annual TED conference in Vancouver, where she spoke about gender identity, coming out and acceptance. Her talk received the first standing ovation of the night and she has continued to spread her message of inclusion with HuffPost Live and CNN. GLAAD is a proud supporter of Gender Proud and we look forward to all their advocacy work to come.
