This last Tuesday the Chilean Senate moved to create a bill that will allow transgender people to change their names and sex legally without sex reassignment surgery one of their top priorities.

Senators must release a draft within 15 days, the Organization of Transsexuals for the Dignity of Diversity told the Washington Blade.

“We celebrate this positive signal and a substantive advance, given the need for the recognition and legal coverage for gender identity,” said the group. “It marks a very important development in the recognition of legitimate rights.”

President Michelle Bachelet included the trans rights bill in her campaign platform and took office only last month.

The Organization of Transsexuals for the Dignity of Diversity hope this means that Chile will become a country that is more open and inclusive, and allows the community of trans people and their families into society.
