It was announced today that War Horse star Jeremy Irvine will play the lead in out director Roland Emmerich's new film Stonewall about the famous 1969 riots. The film was announced last year and will follow a homeless gay teen who becomes friends with others on the streets of New York. He finds himself caught up in both the riots and the ensuing political awakening experienced by many in the LGBT community.
The Stonewall riots were also previously dramatized in the 1995 film Stonewall, which costarred Scandal's Guillermo Diaz, and was nominated for Outstanding Film - Limited Release at the 8th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
Emmerich is set to begin production on Stonewall soon as he also preps for Independence Day 2, set to be released July 2016. Emmerich revealed this past June that the blockbuster action film will include a gay character.
