Supermodel and judge on Oxygen's The Face Naomi Campbell took the stage last night at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles and spoke out in support of Carmen Carrera and the inclusion of trans models in fashion. Campbell went on to introduce Academy Award-nominated actress Ellen Page. Check out the video below:
"And along with GLAAD, I encourage even more diversity in the fashion world, that includes welcoming trans models to the runways. Much love Lea T and also to Carmen Carrera, and I know Carmen is in the house tonight. She's in the fashion magazines W, Italian Vogue and also just to note the recent Barney's campaign [...] The truth is LGBT culture and fashion go hand in hand. They flourish in light of making bold and brave statements."
Carrera, a model and television personality, recently made headlines when a petition began circulating to have Carmen named Victoria’s Secret’s first trans Angel. The petition garnered more than 45,000 signatures. Barneys New York, the iconic high-end department store, recently introduced a campaign called "Brothers, Sisters, Sons & Daughters," which features 17 models who are transgender and gender non-conforming, and will donate proceeds to LGBT organizations.
Special guests included: Rita Moreno who presented the Vanguard Award to Jennifer Lopez. Ellen Page who presented the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to Laverne Cox. Norman Lear received the Pioneer Award. Manny de Guerre, LGBT advocate from Russia, received the International Advocate for Change Award. The 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented nationally by Ketel One Vodka, Wells Fargo, and Hilton Worldwide. The Los Angeles event is presented locally by Delta Air Lines and Bud Light.
