A transgender student at a New York high school is being blocked from attending prom with his girlfriend because he is transgender.

Anais Celini, a senior at Martin Luther King High School in Queens, was told by the school that her boyfriend Nathaniel Baez's "transition was unconventional" and "not beneficial," reports the Huffington Post.

"It's hard because I really wanted her to be able to go to prom with her friends, and me as well, because it is one of the stepping stones in high school," says Baez. However, Baez has said that he is planning a private prom for his girlfriend if the school has not changed their minds by May 22, the day of prom.

School officials have declined to make any comments.

This is a setback from the progress which transgender teens have made so far in the last year. In February, Blake Brockington made local history after being crowned the first transgender homecoming king in North Carolina.

This past September, Cassidy Lynn Campbell was crowned homecoming queen at Marina High School in California. In the month after, Ray Ramsey was voted homecoming king by a landslide at New Hampshire's Concord High School. Both of whom identify as transgender.

GLAAD encourages media to continue reporting on this and other stories of transgender teens facing discrimination in school, just because of who they are.
