Earlier this year, Kasey Musgraves won Grammys for Best Country Song and Best Country Album. Now, she will make history by becoming the first country artist to perform at the New York GLAAD Media Awards.
At the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, at the Waldorf Astoria on May 3, Kacey will be introduced by openly gay country singer Chely Wright, who performed at the GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco in 2010.
The young singer/song-writer, who is a vocal ally to the LGBT community and 2013 GLAAD Spirit Day Ambassador, will perform her hit song, "Follow Your Arrow." With lyrics like, "kiss lots of boys / or kiss lots of girls / if that's something you're into," the song encourages listeners to "say what you think" and "love who you love."
Earlier this week, it was announced that TV icon and LGBT advocate George Takei will be honored with the Vito Russo Award, and superstar Kylie Minogue will also perform.
"America's heartland is changing and support for equality continues to grow across party lines, in our faith institutions, and in country music," said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. "Kacey Musgraves is ushering in a new era in the country music industry, where supporting all loving families is now a core country value. It's only fitting then that Kacey is to become the first country music artist to perform at the New York GLAAD Media Awards."
Additional special guests for the New York event include: Laverne Cox, Laura Prepon, Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black); Robin Weigert, Stacie Passon (Concussion); GLAAD National Spokespersons, Wilson Cruz and Omar Sharif, Jr., and GLAAD CEO & President Sarah Kate Ellis. Additional presenters, and LGBT advocates will be announced.
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives. They also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories from the LGBT community that build support for equality. Each year, the GLAAD Media Awards in New York and Los Angeles bring together more than 3,000 advocates and allies to raise critical funds for the organization's work.
