GLAAD spent the weekend working with Equality Alabama, helping to hone media strategy for the organization, including creating messages that highlight the work it's doing, the use of social media in getting the message out, and creating media moments that call for LGBT equality in the state of Alabama. Leaders from across the state gathered, in person and by webinar, to talk about ways in which to lift up southern stories.
GLAAD's Spanish-language media team supported Univision's Los Angeles affiliate on a two-part segment about Natalia, an accomplished Mariachi violinist and singer who is a transgender Latina. The segment also features Mariana Marroquin, an advocate at the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, who educated the public about the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity. Mariana even got a call from her mother when she saw the segment telling her how proud she was to see her advocacy on television. You can watch the two-part segment following these links. Part 1: Mariachi fue su refugio e inspiración Part 2: Mariachi y valentía para lograr su felicidad
GLAAD urged Nintendo to be more inclusive of LGBT users after the company released a statement saying it was “not trying to provide social commentary” with its game Tomodachi Life, which allows opposite-sex characters to date and marry one another, but not same-sex characters. Late last week, following outcry from fans and GLAAD, Nintendo released a new statement promising to make any future games in the series inclusive of same-sex relationships.
GLAAD spoke to national media outlets about the historic draft of Michael Sam, who became the first-ever openly gay player drafted to the NFL on Saturday. Earlier this year, GLAAD and the You Can Play Project worked closely with Sam in advance of his decision to come out publicly, equipping him with critical interview techniques and effective talking points for speaking about equality. GLAAD's commitment to equality in sports was recently spotlighted when the organization announced a groundbreaking partnership with the You Can Play Project.
