A recent movement known as the 'You Don't Say' Campaign initiated by students at Duke University has been receiving a lot of attention by individuals and the media. The students behind the movement belong to two school-recognized groups called Think Before You Talk and Blue Devils United. The campaign aims to eliminate the use of derogatory language in reference to the LGBTQ community and other topics surrounding gender. The ultimate goal of these students is to cultivate an environment, both on Duke's campus and within the broader community, wherein people communicate appropriately and respectfully without using offensive words or phrases. Instead of telling their listeners how to speak, the students instead each provide statements that begin with, "I don't say... because..." Images of these words with the students behind them serve as powerful statements against the use of defamatory language.
