Today, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley signed a bill into law that bans discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression in housing and employment. The law, SB 212, comes as part of an eight year effort to pass legal protections for transgender Marylanders.

Maryland is now one of 17 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico that have enacted gender identity protections.

“We are closer today to creating an open, respectful, inclusive world that we want for all of our children,” said Gov. O’Malley. “This bill gives us another step closer to that vision and to that reality.”
