So much of what is happening to LGBT Ugandans leaves U.S. advocates feeling helpless. Very close to home, however, New York based Ugandan advocate Milton Allimadi is helping to lead the fight right now to ensure the United Nations does not name Sam Kutesa president of the General Assembly. Kutesa, Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, is running unopposed and is set to take the post on June 11. Kutesa has defended Uganda’s harsh “Anti-Homosexuality" Law.
Allimadi created a change.org petition and is asking the U.S. government to deny Kutesa a visa to block him from serving in the role. This controversial nomination has been criticized by many, including U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who said, “It would be disturbing to see the foreign minister of a country that passed an unjust, harsh and discriminatory law based on sexual orientation preside over the UN General Assembly.”
