Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?

Be sure to check out GLAAD's Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT equality through news, entertainment, and online media.

GLAAD brought media outlets to cover the hundreds that gathered at Washington Square Park for the LGBT Rally for Homeless Youth, which kicked off the National Campaign for Youth Shelter. The Ali Forney Center partnered with the National Coalition for the Homeless to create awareness and get the ball rolling on prioritizing the protection of homeless youth in our country. His Holiness, the Gyalwang Drukpa visited the GLAAD offices, sharing his call to "Live to Love." The Gwalwang Drukpa is the Buddhist spiritual leader for much of the subcontinent of Asia. Check out some photos of the visit!

GLAAD's Entertainment Media team interviewed Test director Chris Mason Johnson. The film tells the story of a young gay dancer living in San Francisco, during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. After GLAAD spoke to editors at the Chicago Sun-Times and also launched an action, the Chicago Sun-Times removed an op-ed originally written for the National Review by Kevin D. Williamson, claiming that Laverne Cox is not a woman, and that transgender people are delusional. The Editorial Page Editor also issued a statement, apologizing for including the inaccurate essay. GLAAD is continuing to work with Chicago-based transgender leaders on additional responses. Read more.

This week, GLAAD staff presented a training on transgender issues for the producers and journalists at "TakePart Live," the news/talk show hosted by Meghan McCain and Jacob Soboroff on Pivot.  Pivot is a digital and satellite channel owned by Participant Media, targeted at young adults between 18- and 34-years-old. GLAAD's presentation focused on how news programs can move beyond the typical news coverage we see and begin to focus on issues like unemployment, healthcare, poverty, violence, and incarceration -- all critical to the health and well-being of the transgender community. We look forward to working with "TakePart Live" and Pivot to create in-depth programming that looks at the realities faced by transgender people. Read more.
