The Japanese developers of one of video gaming's most beloved and long-running franchises has announced that they will soon allow marriage between same-sex couples in the game. At the E3 conference in LA, Square Enix revealed that an upcoming patch for the mmo Final Fantasy XIV will allow characters to engage in "bonding ceremonies" without restrictions on character gender, which is a welcome reversal from a previous announcement that marriage would be restricted to opposite-sex couples.
Kotaku reports that developer Naoki Yoshida told an interviewer (through a translator) that:
We discussed it, and we realized: within Eorzea, why should there be restrictions on who pledges their love or friendship to each other? And so we decided to go this way.
