At the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) meeting this June 14-21 in Detroit, commissioners will vote on a constitutional amendment that could allow for marriage equality within the denomination. In addition, the assembly will consider a resolution that would prevent Presbyterian ministers who officiate same-sex marriages from facing discipline.
More Light Presbyterians, a national network of Presbyterians working for the full inclusion of the LGBT community within the church, is hopeful that these reforms will be enacted. Co-moderator of More Light Presbyterians, Rev. Heidi Peterson, said on the subject,
In 2012, the PC (USA) commissioners voted to allow LGBTQ clergy who are coupled to serve in good standing… Since that time, almost half of all Americans reside in states where marriage is legal for all couples. We need an Authoritative Interpretation which will free ministers from fear of being censured if they officiate at marriages of same gender couples.
Ruling Elder Nathan Sobers, also Co-Moderator of More Light Presbyterians, added,
After 27 years of loving my husband in a supportive faith community, I realize more than ever how important it is to have an amendment to the PC (USA) constitution which will allow couples to be married in their home churches.
