Safe Schools Coalition Australia is the first national coalition to create a safer and more inclusive environment for LGBT youth in Australia. The coalition was launched last Friday at the 2014 National Safe Schools Symposium in Melbourne, with the help of some high-profile politicians and public figures including South Australia Labor Senator Penny Wong, Victorian Liberal Senator Scott Ryan, openly gay Australian Rules football player Jason Ball, and Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson.

According to a report released by the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre earlier this year, an astonishing two thirds of Australian LGBT youth experience bullying and harassment, with schools being the most threatening place. Homophobia and transphobia come from both students and teachers.

Safe Schools Coalition Australia is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education. Modeled on the highly successful Safe Schools Coalition Victoria, the new coalition will bring training, resources, and advice to schools all around Australia in order to end homophobic and transphobic bullying and create an environment more conducive to learning.
