Meet two judges who just made history

Two openly gay judges, Darrin Gayles and Staci Yandle, joined the federal bench yesterday, marking a milestone for several firsts. It was the first day that two openly gay judges were confirmed by the Senate. Gayles is also the first openly gay African-American to be confirmed to a federal bench with lifetime tenure. Further, Yandle is the first African-American and first openly gay judge to serve in her court in Illinois. In a statement from the National Black Justice Coalition, executive director and CEO, Sharon Lettman-Hicks said,

NBJC celebrates both confirmations that will inspire so many in the black and LGBT communities. In addition, we celebrate the vast life experiences that they will take with them to the federal bench as they work to render impartial decisions. It’s a significant sign of progress in our nation when two individuals are judged solely on their merits when being considered for these important lifetime appointments.
