In a recent article in Philadelphia Gay News, readers are taken through a day in the life of out radio host Elvis Duran, host of "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show." Duran has spent three decades climbing up the radio industry ladder only to become the host of the number-one Top 40 morning show in the country, which is based out of New York City. The show is now heard live in nearly 70 markets.
Duran came out as gay in 2010 and has faced challenges throughout his career but he says he has never had much push-back in his adolescence because of his sexual orientation. When it comes to success, he believes that the most important thing is to accept yourself.
I’ve been out of the closet with my colleagues since I was a kid. Back in those days, in the ’80s and early ’90s, it was a novelty to have, like, the fun gay guy. I was always thought of as the fun gay guy in the crowd. But I think we all gravitate toward people who aren’t afraid to be themselves — be it out as gay people or as people who are happy ... baking bread, whatever.
