If you haven't heard of Outcasting, public radio's LGBT youth program, then you're missing out on some of the most honest and accurate representations of LGBT and allied youth in the media. The radio program, recently highlighted in an article by the Huffington Post, debuted in 2011 to give LGBT youth a voice.
According to the teens who speak on the program, often LGBT youth are underrepresented or misrepresented in the media. Their stories are often sensationalized, while the teens themselves are marginalized and victimized. The program gives them a public outlet to discuss issues relating to their everyday lives and to educate listeners from their own perspectives. They've covered issues ranging from bullying and suicide, to marriage equality, and have even had some well-known activists and public figures on to speak, including Dan Savage of the It Gets Better Project and multiple Olympic medalist Greg Louganis.
