GLAAD's Director of News, Ross Murray, attended the White House Forum on Global LGBT Human Rights to talk about LGBT advocacy around the world. Ambassador Susan Rice addressed the crowd with steps the White House is taking to address LGBT human rights abroad, while participants offered the administration what other steps are needed. That evening, GLAAD's CEO & President, Sarah Kate Ellis, joined Ross at the Vice President's residence for a reception with the global LGBT advocates.
GLAAD and George Takei, iconic actor and LGBT advocate, were present for the most successful Columbus Pride event to occur to date. We were proud to join more than 450,000 LGBT people and their allies at the Ohio Pride march and festival. Many people stopped to visit GLAAD board member Lana Moore at our table at the Pride Festival to learn about our work elevating the voices of LGBT people in the media. Read more.
GLAAD and Scouts for Equality brought together active and former Boy Scouts and adult leaders to lead the 44th annual NYC Pride march, where, for the first time in the march's history, Scouts led more than 44,000 marchers down Fifth Avenue in a celebration of LGBT equality. The Scouts attended the march in a highly visible stand against the Boy Scouts of America's ban on gay adults. Since 2012, GLAAD has led a national campaign to secure full equality in the Boy Scouts. Tona Brown made her debut at Carnegie Hall as the first transgender woman of color to perform in the iconic venue. Her show, titled, "From Stonewall to Carnegie Hall," sought to celebrate the progress of the LGBT movement and to thank previous and current advocates, activists, and artists who came before and enabled this momentous occasion. GLAAD helped support and promote the historic event. Read more.
GLAAD was there to help spread the word when four couples had their marriages performed by St. Louis officials in an historic act of advocacy against the statewide ban on marriage equality. The ceremonies were performed on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal ban on marriage equality, being struck down. Read more.
GLAAD shared a video of His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa speaking about against anti-LGBT laws in India and elsewhere around the world. When asked about anti-LGBT laws in his home country of India, His Holiness spoke out against the criminalization of homosexuality. Watch the video and share it here.
GLAAD's Spanish-language team placed Los Angeles area advocate Mariana Marroquin on CNN en Español Realidades en Contexto to discuss the case of a young trans teen who was asked not to wear make-up for her driver's license photo. You can watch the segment in Spanish here. The team also worked with reporter Virginia Gaglianone from La Opinion on a great story she did profiling a support group for trans Latinas in Los Angeles. GLAAD's Spanish-language team placed Xesenia Maurice's great op-ed "Did I forget to mention my dad is gay?" in Huffington Post Latino Voices as part of its commitment to share the stories of people that are often not heard in the media. You can read her piece here. The piece is part of a larger effort to collect stories from teen and adult children of LGBTQ parents that GLAAD is working on with COLAGE. Share your own story here!
