Christian Minard, a 22-year-old college student just one semester shy of graduating Southwestern Christian University, has been expelled from the school after marrying her girlfriend, Kadyn Park, in March. The Christian university, located in Bethany, Oklahoma, has a strict lifestyle covenant which all incoming students must sign. The contract states that being gay and "homosexual behavior" are prohibited.

According to Minard, plenty of students regularly violate the contract in a variety of ways. She told Fox, "There's a lot of things outlined in there that aren't upheld every single day." She believes she has been singled out by the university and discriminated against because she is a lesbian.

Minard was expelled from the university in a letter written by a school administrator, in which he noted that the student's marriage was in violation of the lifestyle covenant and wrote, "Due to this recent event, you will not be able to attend SCU in the future."

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an organization dedicated to defending the rights and liberties of all individuals in the US, will work with Minard to see if anything can be done to rectify the situation. ACLU executive director Ryan Kiesel told Fox, "I would hope that institutions like this university and others would 1) reconsider their policies, and 2) in the event that they are going to apply these codes of conduct against their students to do so in a way that is equal across the board and gives their student the opportunity to respond."

Minard told CNN that after years of struggling with her identity, and having grown up in the Lutheran Church, she has come to believe, "you can still have faith in God" if you are a member of the LGBT community.
