Last night at the 2014 ESPYs presented by ESPN, Michael Sam accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Sam inspired many when he made history this past May for being the first openly gay football player to be drafted into the National Football League. During his speech, Sam quoted Arthur Ashe, the award's namesake, wiping away tears before saying "Start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can." Sam has certainly taken that advice and done a lot to help pass on his wisdom to others struggling with their own identities. Among others, Sam made sure to thank his partner Vito Cammisano, who he called his inspiration, as well as his mother, a single mother who raised eight children.

Sam closed his moving speech with the following advice:

To anyone out there, especially young people feeling like they don't fit in and will never be accepted, please know this- great things can happen when you have the courage to be yourself.
