On Monday, President Obama signed an executive order that prohibits employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity against federal workers and contractors. Obama announced the forthcoming change in June, and many celebrated when the order was put into action.
This step, along with the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the end of DOMA, illustrates the advances made during Obama administration regarding equality and LGBT rights.
As an extension of the recent approval of the Executive Order and the President's overall dedication to LGBT equality, a Q&A will be held this Friday on the White House Tumblr. Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President, will be answering questions that are submitted through the site regarding the new Executive Order and/or steps the Administration has taken to expand opportunity for the LGBT community. Tumblr has also been a strong advocate, as it is one of the many tech companies that has gone purple for Spirit Day.
To participate, ask a question on the White House Tumblr now, and follow along on Friday, July 25th at 1:00 pm ET as your questions are answered.
